Environmental Noise Monitoring

What is Noise pollution?

Noise pollution is unwanted or high levels of sound, and has become an increasing problem today, especially in inner city areas.

The source of most noise worldwide is due to transportation. Motor vehicle noise, due to more and more vehicles on our roads as well as aircraft and rail noise all contribute to high noise levels.

Transportation is the source of most noise pollution

Poor urban planning is also a cause of increased noise pollution. Side-by-side industrial and residential buildings can result in noise pollution in a residential area.

Other sources are office equipment, factory machinery, construction work, appliances, power tools, lighting hum and audio entertainment systems.

Remote Datum works with businesses to monitor the effect of construction on noise pollution.

Why are we concerned with noise pollution?

Construction work creates pollution and needs to be monitored

The noise levels around us can have many effects on our day to day lives.

The effects of noise are varied. It affects both our health and our behaviour. The unwanted sound damages our physiological and psychological health, causing aggression and high stress levels. The annoyance of noise can lead to hypertension, tinnitus, hearing loss and other harmful effects. Stress and hypertension are often the starting causes of much larger health problems. Tinnitus itself can lead to forgetfulness, severe depression and even panic attacks.

How does noise pollution affect your business?

Noise can cause stress, anxiety, tinnitus and hearing loss.

If your business is planning on undertaking construction work, the effects of increased noise pollution should be taken into account.

Statutory Nuisance Regulations control the amount of noise pollution a contractor may make by detailing hours of work and sometimes may write into a contract the increase in background noise allowed.

Defra is presently making a study into noise and its effects in residential areas:- http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/noise/index.htm
